Author and social historian Ruth Derham has just published the first biography on Francis Russell, Bertrand’s Brother. The Marriages, Morals and Misdemeanours of Frank, 2nd Earl Russell.
The book has been commended for its non-partisan stance and thorough research by reviewers and should make for excellent companion reading to Joyce Morgan’s new von Arnim biography if you are still compiling your list of Christmas books.
Given that it focuses on the Russell’s marriages, it will be a welcome opportunity for von Arnim readers to learn more about the enigmatic attraction between Elizabeth and her second husband, from whom she later lampooned in Vera.
Derham is also working on an edition of Russell’s letters and writings, slated for publication next year.
