Enchanted April is the Virago Modern Classics book of the month

The Virago Press has named Elizabeth von Arnim’s 1922 novel Enchanted April as their book of the month for April.

The Virago Modern Classic edition of Enchanted April includes an introduction from Sarah Dunant, whose  In the Name of the Family: A Novel of Machiavelli and the Borgias was published by Virago in March 2017.

The publisher has introduced the Virago Modern Classics book club as part of the fortieth anniversary celebration of the Virago Modern Classics list. Every month Virago chooses a book, shares author biographies and runs book club discussions on social media.

Elizabeth von Arnim readers can visit Virago’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram to follow discussions and post their own thoughts about The Enchanted April. Please use the hashtag #VMCBookClub to make sure your comments are searchable.

  1. This is such a good choice for a Spring read. Several people on twitter have commented on how much they love this novel which is based on a ‘glorious’ holiday von Arnim took at Portifino. This is officially her ‘Happy’ book though ‘Elizabeth and herGerman Garden’ and ‘The Solitary Summer’ share similar qualities.

The award-winning film adaptation of ‘The Enchanted April’ lifts the spirits too! Look out for the pitch- perfect performances of the entire cast – Alfred Mollina and Josie Lawrence especially fine.

    Happy Spring reading.
