Only Happiness Here: Gabrielle Carey’s new book on Elizabeth

We are very excited that Gabrielle Carey’s new book, Only Happiness Here: In Search of Elizabeth von Arnim, has just been published by Queensland University Press and are looking forward to reading it. You can buy a copy here.

The book is being launched on Zoom on 15 October at 6.30pm AEST. You can register here. If you live overseas, a time zone converter might be helpful (search for Brisbane).

Gabrielle Carey has recently written a beautiful piece in the Sydney Morning Herald on the joys of reading von Arnim: “A Spring of Optimism: Writers and Artists Remember the Season”.

  1. Currently reading the book – Elizabeth is a new discovery for me. I love Gabrielle Carey’s & Elizabeth’s keys to happiness.

    1. Hello Jenny,
Thanks for your comment! I am also just reading it. I’m also reading it right now. It’s great to see new work on von Arnim.
      Best wishes,
      Juliane

  2. Have just completed Only Happiness Here, swiftly followed by Elizabeth of the German Garden: A Literary Journey. The former enjoyable, as expected, the latter absolutely wonderful and not to be missed.

    1. Doing it the other way around. Have just read Elisabeth and her German garden, delightful for sure, an now I must know more

      1. Hello Ariel and Anette,
Thanks for your comments – it’s never too late to discover von Arnim. 🙂
Anette, if you are interested, The Enchanted April (lighthearted) and Vera (quite dark) are also great favourites.

Happy New Year to you both,
        Juliane

  3. I don’t know where Elizabeth has been all my life (at 78 …) but what a wondrous joy to discover her through Gabrielle’s book! made me realise what a total romantic I am. I’m sure my Gran and Mum must have known and loved her – partly because they were such verdant and voluminous gardeners – but I don’t remember them talking about her.
Glad there’s a society for such a pillar too!

  4. I discovered Elizabeth a couple of years ago and acquired and read all of her works . Most a couple of times. I just can’t seem to get enough of her. Each re-read is a reinforcement of the charm that captured me in the first place. Presently I’m reading Only Happiness Here, but would like to get my hands on the Maddison and the Morgan studies. I also enjoyed the DeCharms biography.
